Minutes
November 13th, 2024
Roger Willeford presiding, called the meeting to order with a ring of the bell at 9:30AM.
40 members were in attendance today.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and singing of America, the National Anthem, occurred.
Invocation: Carl Cramer, mentioning the children.
Raffle: Dale Henning oversaw the ticket sales and drawing this week.
The weekly pot was $20 and the big (Joker) pot was $490.
The speaker, Kevin Lahner, drew a ticket from the bucket, ticket number 2573.
Congratulations to the winner, Greg Turco.
The deck of cards has 20/53 cards remaining. Greg drew the A♥.
Linda Bontly announces Lisa Burnside is here. Lisa thanks Kiwanians for the sense of community, and brought a few books for anyone to take.
Member Health: Linda Bontly passed around a sympathy card for Art Castro’s wife.
John Sarnow is back, and has some health issues that are being looked at.
Happy Box: Greg Turco donates his raffle winnings to the Truck on Ice.
Other Announcements: Ryan Lewis donates a honey jar to the coffee station, “a healthy sugar alternative.”
Paul Neitzel passed out an updated members contact list.
Woodman’s is hosting bell ringing for Salvation Army.
Linda Bontly has the ten commandments for seniors: “10: Talk to yourself, you’re the only one with good advice.”
John Janes announced checks arrived from three more Truck on Ice sponsors.
Luci Cramer announced an inter-club visit is set for Beloit. It is 12-1PM Tuesday, December 17th, at a lodge.
Gregg Dickinson introduced the day’s speaker, Kevin Lahner. Kevin is a fly fisher, a hunter and avid outdoorsman, and a mountain biker. He is the City of Janesville City Manager. Some of his recent work includes: This year, 11 miles of Janesville streets were resurfaced (not including Center Avenue, a state project due to be completed Friday). The budget is balanced for the first time in years. The 2025 taxes will rise only one percent and Janesville city + county + state taxes is the 5th to last (lowest) statewide. Multiple grants pertaining to General Motors and otherwise are being actively pursued. Zoning code update is underway, which hasn’t occurred since around 1980.
Much of the city’s residential growth is currently at the North side.
Kevin heads a communications committee, which is currently addressing intra-city comms. and how to best use artificial intelligence.
Chad Pearson has an anti-cruise (nights) ordinance penned.
Janesville is one of 13 cities statewide with the city manager governance structure.
Gregg thanked Kevin for speaking and presented him with a Kiwanis Parker pen.
